Buy The PONI

Several people from around the country have approached me about buying a PONI battery back-up sump pump to install themselves. We have agreed to start selling it to customers not located in Michigan.

Installing one is not rocket science but it does require you to do some plumbing.  You will have to remove the old 110 volt sump pump from the sump. These old pumps have a tendency to be real dirty or oily, so put a tarp on the floor. There is a rubber-encased one way check valve halfway up the 1 1/2” pipe. This is where you would do the disconnect. Remember that water is still draining into the sump, so you have to get the main pump back online ASAP. I don’t recommend taking an overnight break….

The PONI unit comes with instructions for installation that are not too hard to follow. I used the instructions the first time I installed one, and did it right the first time. I think you could too.

Keep the PONI pump as low down as possible towards the 110 volt pump. The higher the PONI is, the higher the water will get before the pump turns on….

The tools you will need include a pipe wrench, a pair of channel locks, a pair of wire cutters and a screw driver or nut driver. You will need a length of 1 1/2” schedule 40 PVC and a new screw in piece for the 110 sump. Maybe a new 45 degree elbow, some PVC cement and purple cleaner. The battery is not included, so you will need one of those too. They are much too heavy to ship. I get mine at a battery wholesale supply.  Auto parts stores sell them, too. The instructions suggest a deep-cycle 12-volt marine battery.
You will need something to cut the PVC pipe. I use a a Sawzall, but there are inexpensive hand-powered fine-toothed saws as well as other solutions. Just be careful, as PVC shatters if the saw binds. Make sure you put the unit back in the sump in such a manner as none of it will be touching the outside walls, as the floats can get caught and not work properly.

The price of the PONI Battery Back Up is $324.00 plus shipping is $25.00 for FedEx ground.
